Bring Back Pan Paper Mills
Policy instability made the people of Webuye loose Pan Paper. Pan paper was a source of employment, income and most of
all a center of livelihood that served the people of Kenya. Shutting down of
the industry marked the beginning of darkness in Webuye. It led to increased
crime rate, loss of business fortunes, and closure of some institutions
sponsored by the industry like Pan Paper high school and Pan Paper Primary. Poor Sanitation and poor infrastructure is now the new defination of Webuye. Investing in the town has now become as useless as the letter 'K' in the word knowledge. In the 90s, we had pan paper FC that kept the youths
in the larger Bungoma district busy. The football club was a good source of
inspiration for guys like Dan Ndekerere, head coach, Sunderland AFC
Keroche, Paul Mungai – now playing for Tanzania giants Simba SC among others. The club is now nowhere.what we now see is a stadium that has been turned to a grazing land.
Who are the Rai group? What package do they have for the
people of Webuye as they plan on taking over pan paper. What is their track
record with West Sugar Company in Kakamega and Sukari limited in Homabay,
Kinyara sugar mills in Uganda? All stake holders must be consulted for a long-term
benefit of all parties. It is an acceptable for a group of civil servants to seat
somewhere in a boardroom and decides what to impose on the people or how to
levy the owners of industries. For instance, Kenyan Based
industries like EABL opt to print labels from Tanzania rather than buy from the
locals because of the 25% duty on imported paper. How many jobs are lost in
turn? The government of Kenya should work on its policies for the benefit of her people. It should create more jobs by attracting investors
