HOW SAFE IS YOUR OFFICE WATER?
Push aside bread, water is the true "staff of
life," particularly in the workplace where the water cooler is ground zero
for refuelling our bodies as well as catching up on office gossip. Water, which carries oxygen to the body's cells, makes up more than half of body weight and
humans can't live for more than a few days without it. While our bodies don't
get water just from drinking water alone, as almost all fluids contain water as
well as certain foods.Consuming pure, fresh, clean water is vital for good
health. Is workplace’s drinking water safe?
This is one question that has never crossed minds of most office users. Maybe because we trust the companies that sell us packaged water.
Or maybe we trust our office assistants more. People in offices have moved from the
trend of carrying water from their homes to work. They used to because they didn't trust in the tapped water at the office sinks. Water dispensers
also seemed expensive and therefore a burden to small business. For the few that
manage to buy dispensers have to also fetch treated water from supermarkets
every time it runs out. Companies in the water industry also went a mile in
their game to embrace a green environment. That is when they introduced non
disposable containers where one would give to the supermarket and be given a
refilled one.
However, we are back to the tapped water that we
have long condemned. You might not believe this but unfortunately, it’s the
naked truth. The container on our water dispensers always seem clean and water
pure for drinking. Samwana in his
insight established that office assistants have gone ahead to make bread at the
expense of people’s health. They are known to report early to work. That
might be because they are obligated by their job descriptions. Roles like
cleaning the office, fetching office water are best done before normal business
hours. In their pursuit, they have abused that and gone as far as refilling coolers
with tap water. This, you can’t know unless you are extra vigilant. In our
investigation, we chose a commercial office within Nairobi. We put a hidden
mark on the container as shown in the photo, made regular visits to ensure the
water is being used as always.
Our findings were that the water kept reducing
and increasing though the container never changed. That went on for a month
until we learnt that the water was fetched from one of the taps in the
commercial building.
Therefore, persons responsible should ensure clean
water for their office occupants. People’s heath can’t be put at risk at the
expense of saving 500 for mineral water from the supermarket. Office occupants,
Now you know.be extra careful.
